Did your house loose its sense of style since you had kids? Oh yeah, I know the feeling. We've all been there. As soon as the babies start pulling themselves up or crawling all over the place, the baby-proofing adventure begins. Good-bye oversized glass vases resting in the corner of the living room. Good-bye expensive décor items lying peacefully on the perfect coffee table. Before we know it, we are saying "yes" to those hideous baby gates. I am guilty of not only one gate, but four! What can I tell you? There is really no good and safe way around the baby gates, but you can certainly keep your house stylish if you follow these 4 kid-friendly decorating ideas below.
throwing placing them gracefully on the couch bothers me more than the thought of having to wash them.
1:: Get the leather on!No, I am not talking about your Saturday night leather pants. I am talking about choosing the most durable material for your sofas. When picking that gorgeous white linen upholstered couch, think about that dark sugary grape juice leaking from the oh, so well designed, sip cup and switch all those crazy thoughts to LEATHER! That's what we do around here. Leather for the sofas, leather for the lounge chairs (even though we never lounge), leather for the kitchen stools, and leather for the dining room chairs! For this room, we chose a brown leather sofa and I am so happy we did it. To tone all the brown color down a bit, we've sprinkled on some pillows and a light-colored throw.
2:: Pillows must have zippersWhen choosing your throw pillows, go for the ones that are affordable and have a zipper on so you can easily clean them out when needed. Could you imagine having your kids wear white pants at the playground? So why think you can have a pillow that won't need a regular washing schedule when living with kids. My pillows tend to stay more on the floor than on the couch itself. The picking up from the floor and

I have a fun and exciting project in my hands. I just started to brainstorm about a makeover for my nephew's bedroom. This room has a great size and a huge window, however, somehow this room suffer from poor lighting syndrome. How did that happen? Perhaps the oversized bunk bed is the one to blame. After all, this bunk bed is in fact, kind of large, dark, and too heavy for the bedroom. Or maybe, just maybe, the dated green walls are making this room look darker than it really is. Besides the outdated issues we have to take care of, I also need to address the problem of functionality. Lucas is 10-years-old and needs a desk area, better storage, and great lighting for book reading in bed. Another problem is that most of the décor items in his room don't relate to him anymore. So, to kick off this project, I created the mood board below focusing on timeless items. For this first design board, I am keeping things more on the monochromatic side. But once we have all the wall art, trophies, photos, and books, his room will be filled with pops of color. When creating a space for a child, I like to create an excellent base and ideal workflow for the room. The furniture, desk, shelves, lighting should be timeless items that will work for the child now as well as in 5 years. There is no need to get a full bedroom makeover in the near future. When that time comes, I hope to be able to change just decorative items that will relate to a 15-year-old instead of a 10-year-old. I do believe this little project will take some time to tackle it. But I will keep updating its progress here on the blog.
Here are the sources for the boy bedroom makeover design board: Shelves. Chair. Pillow. Bedding. Lighting. Night Stand. Drum Sticks. Poster. Acrylic Shelves.PS: Get to see more behind the scenes here.

Not too long ago I was planning a nursery. But as every parent knows, time flies by and soon enough you get yourself planning the kids college education instead. Sigh... When we moved to our current house I was about 5 months pregnant. It was such a special time with the expectation of the new addition to our family of four plus our new house. We were experiencing lots of new beginnings, as well as a ton of design projects, like the nursery for the new baby. For my third pregnancy, we decided to surprise ourselves and not find out the sex of the baby. So, when I designed this gender neutral space, I used timeless artwork throughout the room and neutral colors. No blues or pinks. I also wanted this nursery to be a continuation of the design style of our new house. So I brought lots of white and rustic wood tones to this room just like we have throughout the rest of the house. But my main design goal for this space was to create a room that could be easily transformed from a nursery to a big boy bedroom. Function + Style = Perfection. Baby Victor came along on July 27, 2012 (read his birth story here). During a hot Summer night in 2014, while washing the dishes, I heard a loud thud sound and an instant cry coming from upstairs. Before the little guy turned 2, he had already managed to climb his way out of the crib. We gave it another try thinking that maybe it had been a lucky night when he managed to "escape", but the very next night, we were faced with the same scenario. So out goes the crib and in comes the bed. I chose this IKEA bed because of its color, clean lines, and the bonus large drawers underneath it for the much-needed storage space. This bed is perfect for this room. We added some acrylic shelving next to the new bed for his favorite books plus a few new wall decals. A fun bedding from Dwell Studio plus some modern pillows and voila, we had a big boy bedroom for the "big" guy. On the other side of the room, facing the crib and bed area, I designed a desk, dresser, and changing station. We custom made a desk using the same wood from the other side of the room and an IKEA's old dresser that I used to have in my bedroom. Eliminating the changing pad when we were diaper free was all that was needed to have a full functioning desk for future homework sessions. Most of the decor stayed the same. How could someone ever get too grown up for a daily dose of Sharon Montrose's gorgeous animal prints, right?

PATCHI CANCADO :: BORN IN BRAZIL :: RAISED WITH MY TWO BEST FRIENDS :: MET MY HUSBAND WHEN I WAS 13 :: PLAYED TENNIS MY ENTIRE LIFE :: WENT TO COLLEGE IN VIRGINIA :: RAISING MY THREE KIDS :: PASSIONATE ABOUT ALL THINGS DESIGN :: HOPING TO ONE DAY PLAY THE PIANO :: CURRENTLY OBSESSING ABOUT YOGA It all started with a phone call. It was a Friday afternoon, my last day of maternity leave. I remember I was just thinking how in two days I would be back at work, leaving baby Marcus, at the time 6 weeks old along with Bela (22 months old) at daycare. I was excited and a little sad to go back to work at the same time. But then, it all changed, after the phone rang. At the time I was working at a cool ad agency, with cool creative people, designing cool things every day. Even though the job was very good, sometimes my heart just wasn’t there. So, that Friday afternoon when my boss called to let me know that they had made some cuts in the agency, my head was going into thousands of different directions. I wasn’t sure what to feel, what to say, and what to do. I had just lost my job, how was that possible? I always had a passion for interior design, making things pretty, and creating or crafting anything. So, after a lot of thinking, I decided that this was the time to face the entrepreneur field. A time to be adventurous, fearless, and very motivated. The time to combine my graphic designer skills with my passion of interior design. This time, I would not go hunting for another graphic designer job. This time, I would come out of my comfort zone. So in 2009, Trendy Peas was born with a few designs printed on paper. Today, Trendy Peas has evolved to a more complete line of modern nursery and kids’ rooms accessories. From paper prints, to gallery-wrapped canvas, to acrylic crib mobiles and wonderful wall decals. :: MY DESIGN AESTHETICS :: I strive to keep my designs simple. I work from geometric shapes. I like to add patterns to these shapes to evoke more visual interest. But in the end I always feel like less is more. When creating new products, I design pieces that I would use in my kids’ rooms. After all, they are my main inspiration. :: MY FAVORITE ITEMS :: I adore the birth print design. A must-have for any baby and a great gift idea for new moms. My second favorite piece is the acrylic bike decor. This piece is a beauty on the wall. :: TRENDY PEAS NEXT YEAR :: I hope to keep designing pieces for little kids' rooms. I always like a challenge when creating new products. And who knows, maybe in the future, we can start designing pieces for big kids' rooms as well. So check back often or drop us a note. We now have met, but I would love to get to know you better. To stay in touch, like us on Facebook, follow us on Pinterest or Twitter.

Here is Marcus' big boy bedroom. One of my favorite rooms in the house. I wanted to create a room for Marcus that was very functional and stylish at the same time. I also wanted the room to be a continuation of the style and decor of our home. So I opted for neutral tones, with lots of brown, white, beige, creams and then pops of colors here and there. I knew that if I used a neutral color palette I would not have problems creating and sourcing decor items for the space. The furniture is from IKEA. The bed is placed flushed with the dresser and a piece of stained maple wood lays on top to create a one-piece furniture that works really well for the space. We use the same stained maple wood at other places in the room to tie everything together. Having the bed against the wall makes the room more spacious and gives Marcus more areas for playing. I created the wall canvasses, wallpaper, and acrylic bike décor so all the colors would work together with the adorable bedding by dwell studio. The bike décor is Marcus favorite piece of the room. The bright red acrylic really stands out. I guess I could say that the bike is also my favorite piece in the room. I am very pleased with how it turned out. The room is bright, elegant, functional and fun.
