A few of the special kids in my life will be celebrating their birthdays very soon and I decided to do some browsing over the weekend for some cool and unique gifts. I ended up finding some really cool and modern looking toys. These toys not only look like kids would have a lot of fun playing with them, but they also look really cool. In a way they are more than just toys as they can complement a room decor as well. Another great advantage of these toys is that you can leave them exposed and you don’t need storage to hide them away. How great is that?
I love everything about the Chalet Dollhouse by Plan Toys. My daughters would love it, but they would definitely have to compete with me for play time. My turn…
Tea time! Love this Plan Toys Wooden Tea Set. It is so unique and it is sure to last a long time.
How cool is the Early Rider Evolution bike? No way would I store this bike in the garage. It is just too cool!
I have to say that the Wooden Drum Set by Plan Toys is my favorite of all. I can totally see Marcus, the little musician of the family, jamming away. Not sure if mommy and daddy would appreciate the noise level. Sorry guys, it is jut too cute…
I just came across some beautiful finds that are sure to make any nursery very unique. The Caravan crib with red rails below adds a splash of color to its classic and yet contemporary form. This piece of furniture is certain to add a lot of personality to any space.
The fun and bold storage space by Q collection junior makes it easy for the toddler to find toys with its circle cut out door pulls. I love the clean lines and simplicity of it.
How about a raw and unfinished stump as a kids’ stool? Modern, unique and adorable. This one is one of my favorites.
The new Kirie clock from Decoylab is very eye catching. The clock has some beautiful details and the best part of it is that the motor does not make a ticking sound. No one wants to wake up the baby, right?
And to wrap up my top 5 picks for a unique nursery, check out this wonderful tree bookcase. This unique bookshelf is sure to inspire reading in any child. Practical, unique and great design. Who doesn’t want some of that?
Well, before I get ahead of myself I should first introduce myself. I’m Raquel Kohler, the other half of Trendy Peas. It will be my first blog post for Trendy Peas and I thought I would introduce myself before I go on with the topic of beds…
I am Patchi’s sister and most definitely her number one fan. I wish I could say I contribute with the creative aspects of Trendy Peas, but that is not the case. I work on the website and take care of the business side of our company. I do have to say that I LOVE it! I love her creations and love being part of it; in any way that I can.
I live in Norfolk, VA with my husband Nic and daughters Sofia (4) and Olivia (almost 2). For those of you that like to put names to faces, here we are:
Sofia and Olivia have so much fun together. It makes me so happy. Sofia is very sweet and loves making her little sister smile. Olivia is full of energy and is always trying to keep up with her big sister. For those reasons, Nic and I thought it would be so good for them to share the same room. That brings me to the topic of beds…
Since we are redoing their room, we need new beds. Sofia’s current bed is too big to fit in with another bed of that same size. Olivia currently has a crib so we need a new bed for her too. We like clean simple lines and I have been looking for twin beds everywhere… While there are a lot of nice modern options out there, it is hard to find anything that is affordable.
I do love the look of the Sparrow bed from Oeuf. It is both modern and feminine. I am not so happy with the price though. As I need two beds for my two little princesses, the total for the beds alone would cost me a total of $1719.98. And I have not even taken into account the cost for mattresses… Ouch!
I have been trying to convince myself that I would be ok to spend that much money on the beds alone, but I just did not succeed. So I started my search again and remembered an old friend of mine called IKEA. I was pleased to find two great options, but I am having doubts on whether they will work…
The Malm twin bed for the bargain price of $129 would fit perfectly in their room, but does not come with a trundle.
The Odda twin bed priced at $149 may not work because the side headboard may cover one of the windows, but it comes with a nice trundle…
Needles to say, I still have work to do… Finding an affordable modern looking bed has proven to be a difficult task. I would love to hear from anyone that has been through this before. Can anyone out there help me on this one?
It turns out that my baby is ready to move to a big boy bed. I am just not sure that I am ready for this big change. Marcus now can easily climb his crib and jump in to get his blankie. Luckily, once he is in there he calls me to rescue his exit. So I feel that it is time to move him to a bed, although I just can’t face it that he is already two years old.
So here I am gathering ideas for Marcus’ big boy bedroom. I am still only planning and rearranging furniture in my head. This is really only the beginning of his room makeover. At first I didn’t wanted to change much, but I feel that he has changed so much that I would love to incorporate a couple of new pieces that reflect his recent interests such as motorcycles, skate boards, surf boards, airplanes and dinosaurs. I am definitely thinking of adding lots and lots of storage space for all the toys Santa and the grandparents gave him this year. While I think that for kids’ rooms a closed storage space is very much needed to hide all the clutter, I also think that a little bit of open storage is a great idea to showcase some favorite toys, and also a great way to add color to a space.
So I started my search for open storage space ideas and all the spaces below inspired me. I think I might flank his new bed with one of these square selves and then in between them, above the bed, have some art piece to create a focal point in the room. What do you think? Aren’t all these rooms full of inspiration?

I have been busy spending lots of time with my family. But I am slowing getting things organized again and I can’t wait to see all the new things we have in store for Trendy Peas in 2011.
First, I wanted to share with you that soon we will be selling frames to go along with our prints. We opted for a simple and modern frame that comes in a natural color. All frames come with matting, which helps the prints really stand out. The frames will be available for all three print sizes, the 8”x10”, 11”x14”, and the 16”x20”. I think the look of the frame is a great match to our designs.
