I recently worked on a kids CD cover design with classical pianist Lara Downes. What a joy this little project was. Lara found me through Etsy. After she saw one of my owls’ illustrations, she contacted me to see if I would be interested in working with her. I was so thrilled with the request and very enthusiastic about the project. It was very easy to relate to the project. The illustration was working so well with the title, and the CD was targeted to kids. So what more could I ask for? Lara Downes has won over audiences at the world's most prestigious concert venues, including Queen Elizabeth Hall London, the Vienna Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center. Recent appearances have included concerts at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Performances, the University of Vermont Lane Series, the American Academy in Rome, the El Paso Pro Musica Festival, and the Montreal Chamber Music Festival. She is currently Artist in Residence at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis, where she is the host and co-curator of the Studio Classics series. The Nocturnes for Night Owls CD is a wonderful collection of quiet-time music compiled with eclectic flair that both children and parents will love. Below is my copy that she signed and sent to my two little night owls Bela and Marcus. When I got my copy, I glanced over the design really quickly to see is everything looked good. And then, I quickly inserted the disc in my computer and hit play. I was just so curious to hear the music. Was the design speaking to the music at all? Off course since Lara was very much involved with the design process she knew for sure. But this was my first time listing to all the tracks. And wow! It absolutely blew me away. I am really pleased with the final product. The design turned out very cute. I love it all. Thank you so much, Lara! I also love the poem that goes on the inside page of the CD. I might just have to say this poem to Bela and Marcus every night now... Come, night owls, it’s time for bed Time to rest your sleepy heads; The moon is high, the stars are bright Come, night owls, say goodnight; Listen quietly, listen well Let this music weave its spell; Let these lovely lullabies Help to close your owlish eyes; Tuck your wings and burrow deep To peaceful dreams and quiet sleep. -L.D. Listen to some of the tracks here. My favorite track is number 3, Dreaming. Check it out and you might get a copy of your own.
